Working with Deaf Senior Citizens

Presenter - Carol Comp

It is not surprising that many interpreters will say that they are most comfortable socializing and working with Deaf senior citizens.  Their life experiences and stories about them are rich as well as their patience.  Many student interpreters turn to Deaf senior citizens for socializing opportunities because they are so welcoming.  Respecting this generation of the Deaf community starts with understanding their backgrounds, language, world view, tolerance levels and culture.  While this community has offered so much to today's signing community, there is much care that must be taken when asked to interpret for them.  This workshop will cover issues such as interpreter preferences, language idiosyncracies and variances, physical limitations, vision loss, cultural norms and relationships with interpreters.  Video samples of different senior citizen signers will be viewed and discussed in small groups.
