DEAF HEART - Socializing in the Deaf Community

Panel Facilitator - Stefanie Saltern

This workshop will include various leaders of the both the Deaf and Interpreting communities regarding the age old question - "When IS it ok to socialize with Deaf people?"  Hearing people who want to learn ASL realize that the only true path to fluency is to use their newly learned language with native users of the language.  However, after years of hearing students and interpreters coming in and out of Deaf people's clubs and lives, a feeling of resistance has grown.  This workshop will cover the Deaf and hearing perspectives of this phenomenon and how to develop DEAF HEART.  When this workshop is finished, the participants will have gained a better understanding of each of the perspectives offered and a heightened empathy which will guide their decisions in socialization.
