Focus: This workshop is intended to introduce concepts and clinical information encountered in mental health settings. The role of the interpreter will be discussed. It is imperative the interpreter not undermine the clinical goals of the MH clinician; therefore the interpreter needs to be familiar with a variety of mental illnesses, treatment approaches, clinical vocabulary, medications and how to communicate with the clinician regarding the interpreting process or what is impeding your process.

At completion of the workshops, Participants will:

• Better understand the treatment goals of clinicians in MH settings
• Improve their ability to assess if the assignment is within their skill/knowledge level
• Increase their understanding of how their own feelings can interfere with the interpreting process
